How Often Should an Elkay Water Fountain Filter be Changed?

Elkay water fountains are used in all kinds of locations, often in schools, offices, gyms and other public buildings. Whatever the environment your water fountain serves, regularly changing the filter will help you avoid water quality problems and keep flow rates high.

When Should I Replace My Elkay Filter?

Elkay recommends that filters should be changed every 11,000 litres or every six months, whichever comes first. This ensures your water fountain operates properly and ensures there is good balance between performance and practicality.

Some models have a filter status light that will notify you when the filter is due for replacing. If your model has one of these lights, it’s still worth keeping the 11,000 litre or six-month rule in mind. Waiting until the light comes on could allow water quality to dip.

Also bear in mind that water filters in busy locations may need replacing more frequently. Schools and popular leisure facilities are good examples of where your filters may need checking more often.

Why Replace The Filter?

Water fountain filters gradually become blocked up with the impurities they’re stopping. Things like chlorine, lead and other nasty bits that can find their way into your water supply.

Filters can only hold so much before it becomes saturated and can’t perform as effectively. Once a filter has reached this stage you might start to experience:

  • Changes to water taste & odour
  • Poor water flow
  • Additional stress on the unit
  • Poor water quality

Regular replacement ensures your filter is always operating at its best.

What If I Notice Problems Before Then?

While 11,000 litres or six months is our recommended schedule, keep an eye out for these indicators that your filter is nearing the end of its life:

  • The filter status light activates
  • Flow rate drops
  • Taste and odours change
  • It’s been 5-6 months since you last replaced the filter

You don’t have to wait until the filter has reached capacity to change it. If you notice any of these signs, it’s worth replacing the filter.

Is Changing the Filter Complicated?

Changing a filter is straightforward and should only take you few minutes.

The process is usually as easy as:

  1. Switching off the unit and relieving any existing pressure.
  2. Twist the old filter clockwise a quarter turn to remove.
  3. Slotting in the new filter, ensuring the red and white label is facing the green board.
  4. Turning on the water supply and flushing for a minute or so.
  5. Resetting the filter indicator (if applicable).

Some newer models even detect when you’ve fitted a new filter, resetting automatically.
